Summer School

Throughout the summer holidays, we provide a fun and exciting week of workshops on a variety of subjects, such as Improvisation, BSL & Acting on Stage and Film, Introduction to Puppetry, Physical Theatre, Comedy and Visual Vernacular.

“The summer school had a huge impact on my daughter’s confidence and wellbeing to spend time learning with her deaf peers and having the opportunity to develop such an array of skills. It has been wonderful to see her learn to sign and to see a real difference in her feeling for movement and drama in general. I couldn’t quite believe the change in her at the end of the week, it was really moving seeing her perform and going round and hugging her new friends. It was clearly a hugely well-organised event with incredible support.”

Justine Womack, parent of Youth Summer School participant 2019

“Coming to Summer School was really huge for me as I hadn’t had much, if any, contact with other deaf people my age. By meeting others similar to me, I felt very comfortable during the week and even more comfortable in the workshops than I would have if it was a hearing Summer School. Everyone running the activities plus the interpreters and chaperones made me feel safe enough to talk to any of them if I had any problems, which meant a great deal to me. Despite my limited knowledge of sign language, the workshops encouraged me out of my comfort zone and helped me to learn more about communication beyond speech using factors such as facial expressions and body language. By learning these new techniques, it’ll help me to expand my communication day to day but also in acting too. The one I enjoyed the most was performing a script translated from English to BSL because even though I needed help with it, performing it and exploring how to give it a stronger impact to the audience was really interesting to me. However, I did enjoy all of the workshops including the storytelling through movement and the dance routine that we performed as a group in the showcase. At the end of week, I felt like a different person as my horizons have been broadened by the experiences I had during the week and I was upset to leave the comfort I found and the friends that I had made.”
