Deafinitely Theatre have partnered with The Royal Court Theatre to bring you the Hub Writers Group.

The Hub Writers Group provides an opportunity for new and emerging Deaf artists to explore the many possibilities of bringing stories alive onstage. Through a series of workshops and ongoing support from the company, the artists get the chance to work with various industry professionals as they start to form their own individual approach for storytelling.

Writers will be chosen through an application and asked to commit to the full course of workshops.

Our Writers Group have been chosen for this year. There will be more opportunities to join the Writers Group next year. Sign up to the Hub Mailing List to be the first to know when applications open.

How to Apply

There are 2 ways to apply:

  1. Complete the online application form and send us a sample of something that you have already written.
  2. Complete the online application form and then complete the following writing task: Character 'A' finds 20 phone calls or messages they don’t recognise in their partner's phone (Character 'B'). Write a scene showing what happens next?

You can submit your work in written English (5 pages) or British Sign Language (Video 3-5 mins). Your work must contain dialogue between more than 1 person, not a monologue. Please send to [email protected]. Deadline for submissions: 31st August 2018

Submitting in BSL using video

If you want to submit your work in British Sign Language, film yourself on your phone presenting the dialogue in BSL. Submit your video to [email protected]. The file size will be large so do this using WeTransfer. A qualified interpreter will then translate the video which will then be sent to the literary department at the Royal Court Theatre.

  • Please start the video with your name, finger-spelt slowly and clearly in BSL
  • Make sure you are well lit and we can see your signing clearly.
  • Video submissions should be 3-5 minutes long
  • Please use role-shift to show the different characters.
  • We are NOT looking at your ‘acting’, we are only interested in the dialogue you are presenting. Please do not
  • worry about presenting good acting. We are interested in the characters situation and their interaction.
  • Make sure your signing space is clearly visible in the video.
