Interpreting mental health – Workshop for Interpreters

Deafinitely Theatre’s production of 4.48 Psychosis was revived last year following an unprecedented response to its subject matter surrounding the mental health of deaf people. This opened a wider conversation around deaf mental health within the deaf community, amongst academics and sector professionals. The way in which sign language is used in this area needs more research and discussion. As our ideas around mental health evolve, so must the language.

This workshop for BSL Interpreters will explore the current state of British Sign Language on the topic of mental health and how the language had changed over time. We will look at new signs enabling participants to understand how to talk about this topic sensitively.

Minimum Requirements: Qualified BSL Interpreter (This workshop is aimed at qualified BSL interpreters only and will count towards continuing professional development points)

Hannah Whalley is a qualified mental health nurse and is deaf. She has worked at Springfield Hospital for 5 years as a Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN).

Victor Nathan

Victor Nathan is a qualified mental health nurse and is hearing. He has worked at Springfield Hospital for 12 years and is aCommunity Psychiatrist Nurse (CPN)
