Deafinitely Theatre have teamed up with producers Matt Maltby (Paines Plough), Deepa Shastri (Baz Productions), Alex Turner (Deafinitely Theatre) and Rachael Veazey (Deaf Explorer) for a free Zoom event for anyone interested in theatre producing. Our panel, with a wide-ranging experience of producing theatre for deaf audiences, will be discussing the role of the producer, approaches to theatre producing in different settings and how to self produce as an artist. 

This is an opportunity for emerging producers, theatre makers and artists to learn more about producing and ask questions.

Panelists 

Matt Maltby

Matt’s work with D/deaf artists includes Midnight Movie by Eve Leigh, directed by Rachel Bagshaw at the Royal Court, and The Process, written and directed by Sarah Bedi for BAZ Productions at The Bunker Theatre. Both productions were told in BSL and Spoken English, and were created by D/deaf and hearing teams.

Other work includes The Trick (Bush Theatre) and Fabric (Soho Theatre). Matt was the New Work Associate at The Bunker Theatre between 2018 and 2020, during which time the theatre won The Stage award for Fringe Theatre of the Year, and the Offie for Best Programming Policy. He was awarded a Stage One Producers Bursary in 2018, and is one of the founding producers of Pint-Sized.

Deepa Shastri

Deepa has worked in the arts and cultural sector on various levels for the last 15 years as an actress, BSL consultant/director of artistic sign language and project manager/associate producer. She is also an expert on deaf and hard of hearing audience development and has specialist knowledge in theatre access solutions for deaf people.

Associate Producer credits include The Process, Bunker Theatre, Unlimited, as part of London 2012 festival programme and Liverpool’s DaDa Festival.

BSL consultant/director of artistic sign language credits include RSC, Royal Court Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Neon Dance at The Place, Battersea Arts Centre and Movement of the Soul with Dreamatorium Theatre.

TV, Film and Stage acting credits include Hands Solo, The Kiss and All Day, Deaf Funny, Ch4 Rush, BBC See Hear’s Switch and on stage, Fingersmiths Ltd production Frozen. She signed a song solo at the London 2012’s Paralympics Opening Ceremony. 

Alex Turner

Alex Turner is a freelance producer and general manager. His career has spanned producing premières and revivals of plays and musicals at theatres including Sheffield Theatres and the Bush Theatre, as Interim Producer for both; project management, including TheatreCraft 2018; theatre PR, with Kate Morley PR and the RSC; and working on the general management of internationally acclaimed plays and musicals at Playful Productions. He has worked for some of the most prestigious theatre companies in the UK including The Barbican, RSC, Frantic Assembly, non zero one, Bush Theatre, Sheffield Theatres and Soho Theatre.

His recent independent Producer credits include: God’s Dice (for Soho Theatre), A Prayer for Wings (King’s Head Theatre), Clybourne Park and Gently Down The Stream (Park Theatre – Olivier Award nomination), Homos, or Everyone in America and Adding Machine: A Musical (Finborough Theatre) and One Arm (Southwark Playhouse – Off West End Award).

Rachael Veazey

Rachael Veazey has worked as a youth theatre director, workshop facilitator and T.I.E performer for over 19 years, working with Deaf, disabled and non-disabled young people living in the inner city of Birmingham.

She founded the first ever Deaf/hearing youth theatre in the UK. Founding director of Deaf Explorer CIC, she has managed and co-produced several Arts Council England funded projects, Unlimited funded projects and other commissions. She is currently producing her first ever festival, Deaf Explorer: Square Eye Festival
