Last year, Deafinitely Theatre and Unlimited held an event at Southbank Centre to discuss theatre interpreting for deaf audiences – what works, what doesn’t, what more is needed? Provoked by a Facebook video in which Paula Garfield, Artistic Director of Deafinately Theatre, explained her frustration at the traditional model where some theatres employ a BSL theatre interpreter to stand on the edge of the stage, and then do little engagement activity to get deaf audience members to attend, the event asked: surely there are better ways to provide access, create engaging theatre and captivate deaf audience members?

It was an intense discussion with an exceptional panel chaired by David Bellwood, access manager at The Globe and chair of Deafinately Theatre. Many different perspectives were shared and now we can share it with you too via video. The video below has both BSL interpretation and captions, as well as voice audio.
