Soho Theatre

Soho Theatre, one of London's top theatres for new writing, supported Deafinitely Theatre in creating a new full length play. ‘Dysfunction' was performed at the Soho Theatre venue in London's West End in July 2006.

This relationship took over 3 years to develop, including a development run of 'Dysfunction' at the Oval House Theatre in 2004.

ALRA - The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts

ALRA is a prestigious acting college, based in South London. They entered into a partnership with Deafinitely Theatre to host a theatre skills training course for young Deaf people interested in the stage and screen. Several of the course students appear regularly on TV and Theatre.

Modules included acting, translation (translating an English script into BSL) , improvisation, devising and movement. All modules were led in BSL by deaf/hearing professional practitioners who were themselves fluent signers.

Shape - Deaf and Disabled Arts

Shape hired Deafinitely Theatre director Paula Garfield to direct their 2005 National Academy of Deaf Theatre. The end of course show, 'Love or Lust' was a sell out performance at Jackson's Lane Theatre in North London.

Monitoring

According to linguists, researchers, teachers, and to the Deaf community, British Sign Language (BSL) is a full, rich language in its own right with its own grammar, structure and syntax. Most scripts are written in English format, so for deaf actors or BSL interpreted theatre, the script must be translated into BSL.

- For deaf / hearing actors who will perform in BSL, Deafinitely Theatre can provide support to ensure that their presentation accurately reflects the concepts in the script and is clearly understandable to the deaf audience.

- For interpreters who will interpret the play into BSL to give access to Deaf audiences, Deafinitely Theatre can give you vital independent feedback on the smoothness and comprehensibility of your translation during the rehearsal period.

This service is normally charged to the venue / production company and not to the individual interpreter / actor involved.

Any enquiries, please contact Paula Garfield at info@deafinitelytheatre.co.uk

Development

You may have an idea that you wish us to develop further. You may be a teacher or an organisation wanting a topic to be converted into a play - we can consult with you to make it happen. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us, we will be very happy to help.

Past development work

'It's a Small World'

Deafinitely Theatre was commissioned by the BDA (British Deaf Assocation) and Sign Community to create a theatre piece with a group of Deaf participants who had never acted before.

This piece of new experimental theatre from a Deaf perspective was shown at Inverness in Scotland at the annual BDA Conference and Congress.

'Drama at the Tower of London'

The Tower of London, the world famous London landmark, commissioned Deafinitely Theatre to recreate a medieval drama with young Deaf participants.

We were given special access to some of the closed rooms in the ancient castle, and we enabled the group to experiment with telling stories through sign language and visual theatre.

This became a stunning public performance
at the Tower of London.
